WE ARE DOWNTOWN FOLEY
We are a place of beginnings. In 1905 John B. Foley envisioned a community where farmers could bring their crops to the people. The rail spur that began here shipped fresh food from South Baldwin County throughout the region. In 1915, the community incorporated and downtown thrived as a place where farmers came to market.
It was here that Navy Pilots embarked on their journey to fight in World War Two. Local legend John Snook transformed his telephone operators into the Nylon Army – women ready to stand and defend the region from German invaders. Those that fought in the war found a welcoming place to set down roots during peacetime.
In the decades after the war, the region began to transform. Visitors eager to enjoy the white sand beaches and clear ocean waters of the Gulf of Mexico flocked to the area. Downtown Foley thrived as the primary shopping and dining destination for the growing coastal resorts of Pleasure Island.
As the region continues to grow at a pace that changes the landscape each year, Downtown Foley is embracing its role as an authentic place with the warm family welcome of a true community that believes in its future. Downtown is the place where the history and memories of coastal Alabama comfortably meet the spirit and energy of a forward city.
